So this had to be made. A faux version of the king of bbq sandwiches. I heard this rumor of making home-made meat substitutes from jackfruit. Yes, you heard me right... Jackfruit. I personally had only ever had the very sweet yellow stuff before this, and couldn't imagine it to be a very good meat replacement. So I researched about it and found that you can use young, green jackfruit, which I didn't even know existed, to mimic the texture of meat.  The chef in me was up for the challenge! I was blown away at how good this recipe turned out. Was it ever scrumptious! Don't take my word for it, here's the recipe, try it out for yourself and let me know what you think ;)

What you need:

  • 2 - 20 oz canned young green jackfruit in water or brine. Brine gives a slightly different flavour
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 cup BBQ sauce (you can use store bought or homemade)

The how to:

  • rinse and drain young jackfruit and place all ingredients into a sauté pan, simmer for about 30 mins until jackfruit becomes tender, and the sauce has thickened.
  • pull apart and shred jackfruit with 2 forks. Remove the cores if you'd like it to better resemble the texture of meat. I didn't do this because I didn't mind the texture of the cores.
  • serve on a bun topped with avocado coleslaw. (coleslaw & homemade BBQ sauce recipes to be posted next!!)
